Leadership Workshop
On Wednesday, December 15th, members of student council had the opportunity to attend a Leadership Workshop at SouthGreen Elementary. At the workshop, students worked on leadership activities to refine their leadership skills. Student Council members had a great time and plan to attend another workshop this spring.

Random Act of Kindness
On Tuesday, Student Council held their first meeting after school to discuss the
upcoming event called " Random Act of Kindness Day". On Friday, December 17th students will have a chance to give back to dog pound. Instead of coming to dog pound on that Friday to receive a gift, students will be able to bring in any gift to “Fill up the dog pound!” Feel free to bring in any item that you choose that someone else would like to receive.
Items you could bring…
Gently used T-Shirts, Shoes, Sweatshirts, toys, backpacks, jewelry, stuffed animals, board games, sports items, schools supplies, silly bands/rings, candy, jackets, books, etc.

Elections Are Over!
You heard right! Student Council elections have been tallied and we now have 8 new members of Student Council! For the past two weeks students have been campaigning around Highland asking for votes. Posters were up, candy was given and speeches were made. On Friday, November 19th students running in the election presented a speech to their classmates. There were four students chosen from fourth grade and four students chosen from fifth grade. These students were chosen by their classmates. Congratulations to all students who ran in the election! So What Is Student Council?
What is the role or purpose of the student council?
There is no one right answer to this question but rather something that needs to be discussed and developed with the students because if it comes from the needs and/or interests of the students it will ultimately be more successful. Although there are many options it is important that there is a clearly defined purpose of the student council. Here is a list of some possible ideas:
Student leadership development is the process of involving students in meaningful ways both in and beyond the classroom. It is providing opportunities for students to demonstrate their talents, skills, and interests while continuing to develop new skills. It is also about giving students more ownership of the programs they attend.
Why is it important for your program to develop student leadership?
First and foremost, student input can improve and strengthen programs in ways that the Director could not do alone. Students bring new energy and ideas to the program. Second, student leadership provides opportunities for students to get involved and to learn skills that can be transferable to the workplace or community. Finally, student leadership deepens each student's commitment to adult literacy and increases the chances that the student will continue to learn.
